No wonder I LOVE aprons!~

My sister-in-law from Germany sent me this lovely tasty bit of history about Aprons. I have loved aprons since the time I can remember. I have collected them along with market bags and they fill my home. No wonder I wear them like a second skin. I do recall my Grandmama wearing hers from the time she awoke to the time she retired for bed. A cozy comforting thought indeed.

APRONS

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few,it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing
hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.
And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow,
bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the menfolks knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

I love this apron story Suz :) My Mom-in-law gifted me with an apron for Christmas for dyeing my yarn. With the apron she also gave me this story, I enjoyed reading it so much and it was lovely to read it here again:)
Happy Wednesday,
Warmly

I love this! I have a beautiful apron that I hardly ever wear---I just forget about it! I need to put it front-and-center so that I actually put it on when I'm in the kitchen. . .

I have actually read that before and love it too! Especially imagining the shy child (my little Chessa) hiding behind the apron.
So happy to be sharing more apron love with you soon!

Suzanne, I love your apron story. I have a fetish for aprons...hence, the name of my blog. My mother put on an apron in the morning to start her chores and it will always be a wonderful memory of her for me. Thank you for the photos and sharing.

You made me smile with your wonderful apron story. Do you use your aprons? An artist friend of mine wears a paint-covered apron in her studio. When she gets home she puts on her kitchen apron. With chagrin, she told me she always has an apron on. For her, it is a symbol of work. Thanks, Suzanne! love, Beth
